Project Bookmark Canada brings together real and imagined landscapes by placing text from stories and poems in the exact physical locations where those literary scenes are set.
The bookmark design is a careful balance of brand recognition and readability. It needs to be recognizable as one of many installations across Canada without getting in the way of what people really want to see - the author's text. The installations are metal with a printed ceramic surface.
This fourth Bookmark in the Project Bookmark Canada series is “Essentialist” from Airstream Land Yacht by Ken Babstock, published by House of Anansi, and bookmarked at St. George and Bloor Streets, Toronto on October 21, 2010. Ken Babstock’s Airstream Land Yacht was a finalist for the Griffin Prize for Poetry, the Governor General’s Literary Award and The Winterset Award, and won the Trillium Book Award for Poetry. The italicized lines in “Essentialist” are from Ralph Waldo Emerson’s essay Nominalist and Realist.
